History

The origins of Easter can be found in the New Testament of the Bible, which describes how Jesus was jailed by Roman authorities for claiming to be the “Son of God.”

Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect between 26 and 36 AD, sentenced Jesus to death by crucifixion. According to the authors of the gospels, Jesus was reborn after 3 days to prove that he was the living son of God.

In Protestant Christianity, the beginning of Eastertide is marked on Easter Sunday and the end of Eastertide is known as Pentecost Sunday which comes on the 50th day after Easter Sunday.

Many Easter traditions and symbols have roots in the Jewish holiday of Passover and in the Pagan Celebrations of the Pagan goddess Eostre.

The holiday is said to conclude the “Passion of Christ”, which is a series of events and holidays.

It starts with Lent (Is
a 40 day period of prayer, fasting, and sacrifice) and ends with the Holy week
which includes Maundy or The Holy Thursday (The celebration of Jesus’ Last
Supper with his disciples), Good Friday (The day Jesus was crucified) and
Easter Sunday.

Easter is celebrated on a different date
each year. Easter is going to be celebrated on April 17, 2022, this year.

Significance

The day commemorates the return of Christ, who offered himself as a sacrifice for humanity’s sins. The resurrection establishes him as the real son of God, having triumphed over evil and death before going to paradise.

Celebration

It is a day of feasting and celebration, with people attending religious services, decorating and distributing Easter eggs, and participating in traditional Easter games such as egg rolling, egg tapping, and egg decorating. The Easter egg, like the Easter flower (which is used as a church adornment), represents new life and fertility. April is also the start of spring and the end of the winter season.

Easter Sunday and related holidays, such as Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Palm Sunday, are referred to as “movable feasts.” Although Easter holds significant religious significance in Christianity, numerous rituals extend back to pre-Christian, ancient periods. This Christian holiday is also linked to the Jewish feast of Passover and the Old Testament’s account of the Jewish exodus from Egypt.
