The Hamirpur Assembly Constituency has Narinder Thakur of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kashmir Singh Thakur of the Communist Party of India Marxist CPI (M), Pushpendra Verma from the Indian National Congress (INC), Sushil Kumar Surroch of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) contesting for this year’s Himachal Pradesh Assembly Elections. The sitting BJP MLA Narinder Thakur previously contested elections in 2012 on a Congress ticket. 

Himachal Pradesh has long been an anti-incumbency state, with the BJP and Congress alternately governing since 1985. The Aam Aadmi Party hopes to change Himachal Pradesh’s political structure this year.

Last time, the BJP won 44 of Himachal’s 68 assembly seats, while the Congress won 21. The CPI (M) had secured one seat. In order to form the state government, a party must win 35 seats.

In 2017, Narinder Thakur of the BJP won the seat by defeating her closest rival Kuldeep Singh Pathania of the Congress with a margin of 7,231 votes. Anil Mankotia of the Communist Party of India Marxist, Lal Singh Mastana of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Raj Kumar of Samaj Adhikar Kalyan Party and independent candidates Ashish Kumar and Kamal Pathania also contested the 2017 election.

Hamirpur is one of the 68 assembly constituencies in Himachal Pradesh. Hamirpur falls under the Hamirpur district and Hamirpur Lok Sabha Constituency. Hamirpur has more than 74,000 eligible voters. 

In 2012, Prem Kumar Dhumal of the BJP defeated Narinder Thakur of Congress by 9,302 votes. Anil Mankotia Communist Party of India Marxist, Avneesh Sharma of Himachal Swabhiman Party (HSP), Naveen Singh of Samajwadi Party (SP), Vipat Raj of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and an independent candidate, Ashish Kumar, also contested the HP Assembly Elections in 2012. 

Himachal Pradesh votes in a single round on November 12. Results will be announced on December 8. Elections to the Gujarat assembly are also expected to be held in December this year.
