The Ghaziabad police on Monday issued a fresh notice to Twitter India Managing
Director Manish Maheshwari, asking him to attend in-person the police probe into
the case related to tweets on the assault on an elderly Muslim man earlier this
month. Maheshwari had earlier offered to join the investigation
virtually.

“Failing to appear before the police would be considered as
non-cooperation in the investigation & action will be taken as per law,” ANI
quoted the notice by Ghaziabad police as saying.

Maheshwari now has to appear at the Loni Border Police Station by 10:30
am on Thursday. The police have also asked Twitter India’s Resident Greivence
Officer Dharmendra Chatur to attend appear on Thursday.

Maheshwari, a resident of Bengaluru, was initially issued a notice by
the Ghaziabad police on June 17 and was asked to record statements at the Loni
Border police station. He assured of his co-operation with the police, Superintendent
of Police (Ghaziabad Rural) Iraj Raja told PTI.

The Ghaziabad police also issued notice to Twitter India and the news website
The Wire in the case, in a number of Congress leaders were also accused of
sharing the video of the assault with the intention to stoke communal violence.

The video of the incident surfaced on June 14, in which Abdul Samad Saifi,
72, claimed he was abducted in an autorickshaw and locked up in a house in
Ghaziabad on June 5. He claimed he was assaulted and forced to chant ‘Jai Shri
Ram’, and that the assailants cut his beard.
