As the world changed with the pandemic, so did the connotation for Kovid Kapoor’s name. Kovid Kapoor, co-founder of Holidify, a Bengaluru-based travel firm, has been the source of memes, jokes and puns, all at the expense of his name.

Kovid, which is phonetically similar to “Covid”, is a name derived from the religious verses of the Hanuman Chaleesa, and it means ‘scholar’.

After numerous jokes at his expense, Holidify’s co-founder Kovid Kapoor finally took to Twitter to state, “My name is Kovid and I’m not a virus”.

Kapoor also shared the experiences he has had ever since the pandemic struck. From a bakery that tried to “correct” his name by writing ‘c’ instead of  ‘k’ on his birthday cake to a Starbucks employee who burst out laughing while announcing his name, Kapoor’s experiences have amused and entertained many on Twitter.

According to Kapoor, the elocution of the name has a soft ‘d’ sound, unlike ‘covid’, that has a bold ‘d’ sound to it.

Shared on Tuesday, one of Kapoor’s tweets talking about his name-related experience on an international trip has garnered more than 33,000 likes on Twitter, with multiple comments. One user wrote “I can imagine an announcement at an airport. This is the final call for Mr Kovid, kindly board your flight before you miss it”.

After the tweet went viral, Kapoor went on to share more such incidents, both amusing and hilarious.

Kapoor shared that when he doesn’t feel like being joked about, he often introduces himself as “Kabir Kapoor”, a fake name that helps him avoid the name conversation. He believes that even though Covid has made a mockery out of his name, he often makes sure to take the jokes in light humour.

A Twitter user once found his name in a newspaper from 2008 and tagged him on Twitter. Another time, a customer care executive admitted to having joked about the name with his fellow colleagues.
