Amazon Festival Quiz (October 13, 2021): Who wrote great epic Ramayana?

a) Veda Vyas

b) Krishna

c) Dronacharya

d) Valmiki

Answer: Valmiki

Valmiki is renowned as the harbinger-poet in literature. He
is credited with authoring the epic Ramayana, which has been dated between the
5th and 1st centuries BCE. He is also attributed to being the first
poet and author of the Ramayana, the earliest epic poem.

The Ramayana is a Hindu epic that narrates the story of
Rama, a prince from Ayodhya in the Kingdom of Kosala, and his wife Sita, who is
abducted by Ravana, Lanka’s demon king (Asura).

The Ramayana contains 24,000 shlokas and seven cantos (kaas)
. It is roughly 480,002 words long.

Valmiki’s Ramayana has been dated between 500 and 100 BCE,
putting it roughly contemporary with early Mahabharata versions. Like many
great epics, it has undergone a process of interpolations and redactions,
making it difficult to date accurately.

According to British humourist Aubrey Menen, Valmiki was
“recognized as a literary brilliance” and so was labeled an
“outlaw” as part of an “Indian Enlightenment” period because
of his “philosophic skepticism.” Valmiki is also supposed to have
lived during Rama’s lifetime. According to Menen, Valmiki is “the first
author in all history to incorporate himself into his own work.”
