Amazon Festival Quiz (October 13, 2021): Dussehra is also known as?

(a) Deepavali

(b) Vijayadashami

(c) Navaratri

(d) Kumbh Mela

Answer: (b) Vijayadashami

Every year, at the end of Navaratri, Vijayadashami, also
known as Dussehra, is a prominent Hindu festival. It is celebrated on the tenth
day of Ashvin, the seventh month of the Hindu Luni-Solar Calendar, which occurs
between September and October in the Gregorian calendar.

In different areas of the Indian subcontinent,
Vijayadashami is commemorated and celebrated for different reasons.
Vijayadashami marks the culmination of Durga Puja in India’s southern, eastern,
northeastern, and some northern areas, celebrating goddess Durga’s victory over
the buffalo monster Mahishasura to restore and safeguard dharma.

It honors deity Rama’s triumph over Ravana in the
northern, central, and western states, and marks the conclusion of
Ramlila.

Arjuna alone annihilated over 1,000,000 soldiers and
vanquished all Kuru warriors, including Bhishma, Drona, Ashwatthama, Karna, and
Kripa, on the same day, demonstrating the triumph of good (Dharma) over evil
(Adharma). Alternatively, it denotes adoration for one of the goddess Devi’s
aspects, such as Durga or Saraswati.

Processions with clay sculptures of Durga, Lakshmi,
Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya are carried to a river or oceanfront,
followed by music and chanting, after which the figures are submerged in the
water for disintegration and goodbye.

On the other hand, on Dasara, the colossal effigies of
Ravan, symbolising evil, are set ablaze with pyrotechnics, signaling the end
of evil.
