India and Pakistan will begin their Asia Cup 2022 campaign when they take on each other on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium in the United Arab Emirates. The fixture has already generated buzz among cricket fans and they will be looking forward to finding out who comes out on top.

India has faced Pakistan a total of 14 times in the Asia Cup in both ODI and T20I formats, winning eight matches compared to Pakistan’s five victories while one match was abandoned. However, Sunday’s match will offer extra motivation to the Indian players, who will be looking forward to taking revenge for their humiliating defeat in their last meeting at the T20 World Cup 2021, which coincidentally, was also organised at the Dubai International Stadium.

Let’s take a look at India and Pakistan’s rivalry at the Asia Cup.

1984 edition: India (winner) 

Team India beat Pakistan by 54 runs at the inaugural edition of the Asia Cup at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. India decided to bat first and set a target of 189. Pakistan was then bowled out for 134 runs in 39.4 overs.

1988 edition: India (winner)  

The edition was organised in Bangladesh and India registered their second victory over Pakistan in this edition in Dhaka. India bowled Pakistan out for 142 runs and successfully chased the target in 40.4 overs. Team India also won the trophy in that edition.

1985 edition: Pakistan (winner)

Pakistan registered their first-ever victory against India at the Asia Cup during this edition. They set a target of 267 runs to India, who were bowled out for 169 runs. 

1997 edition: Match abandoned

The match was abandoned due to rain. The fixture began brightly for India, who claimed five wickets in nine overs as Pakistan scored 30. However, the game did not finish.

2000 edition: Pakistan (winner)

Pakistan registered its second victory against India at the continental tournament. Pakistan defeated India by 44 runs in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

They set a target of 296 runs to India while batting first, however, the Men in Blue were bowled out at 251.

2004 edition: Pakistan (winner) 

Another Indian defeat ensued as Pakistan defeated their arch-rivals by 59 runs. Pakistan batted first and posted a target of 301 to India. In the second innings, India could only score 241 for eight wickets before the stipulated 50 overs finished.

2008 edition: India and Pakistan win one each 

Group stage: India beat Pakistan in the group stage by six wickets in Karachi in what was their first victory over them in the Asia Cup since 1998. Pakistan scored 299/4 while batting first, while India successfully chased the target in 42.1 overs.

Super 4s: Pakistan defeated Team India in the Super 4s with an eight-wicket victory. India set a target of 309 while batting first. However, Pakistan chased the target with 27 balls left.

2010 edition: India (winner)

India won the match vs Pakistan in this edition with a thriller that continued till the final over. Pakistan chose to bat first and set a target of 268. India chased the target and won in the last over by three wickets.

2012 edition: India (winner) 

India defeated Pakistan in Mirpur by six wickets and 13 balls to spare in this edition. Team India bowled first as Pakistan scored 329 for six wickets. Virat Kohli’s career-best 183 off 148 balls helped India to a successful chase.

2014 edition: Pakistan (winner)

Pakistan beat India in Mirpur by one wicket and two balls left in this edition. India batted first and scored 245 for eight wickets. A final over thriller ended when Pakistan edged India in the match by successfully chasing down the target.

2016: India (winner)

The Indians defeated Pakistan by five wickets in Mirpur in this edition. This edition was played in a T20 format and India bowled Pakistan out for only 83 runs. India hunted down the target successfully with 27 balls left.

2018: India registers double over Pakistan

The Indians defeated Pakistan twice in this edition, once in the group stages and the second time in the Super 4s.

India registered an eight-wicket victory in the group stages. Pakistan set a target of 162 while batting first. India lost two wickets while chasing the target in only 29 overs.

In the Super 4s, India replicated their group stage performance as they registered a nine-wicket win. Pakistan batted first and mustered a total of 237 runs for seven wickets. India chased the target in 39.3 overs, losing only a single wicket.
