The team usually follows a Panther blue, silver and black color scheme for their uniforms and this is the first time in the franchise’s history that it has sported an all-black variation of the uniforms. But this will be the first time they wear their black helmets and uniforms together.

Although Carolina will wear black jerseys and pants for the 19th time on Thursday, the black helmet gives the all-black ensemble a completely new dimension.

The NFL gives each team three opportunities a year, including the preseason, to wear alternate uniforms. One of those three instances is the black uniform and helmet, Carolina is wearing.

Last season, NFL had moved on from its one-helmet rule, which prohibited teams from using more than one type of helmet throughout the season. Teams were then able to develop creative ideas for alternative lids as a result.

The Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals were amongst the teams that unveiled their new headwear this year.

Carolina Panthers’ season so far:

Panthers traded for quarterback Baker Mayfield from Cleveland Browns in the off-season to bolster their offense. Head Coach Matt Rhule was thought to be a perfect person who can combine the QB play of Mayfield with the sensational running of star running back Christian McCaffrey.

The team had a poor start to the season, suffering close defeats at the hand of the Browns and then the New York Giants.

What followed then is very surprising for the team given the talent it possessed. They have lost five of their past seven games, fired HC Rhule and traded RB McCaffrey and WR Robbie Anderson.

The team is dead last in the league in completion % with 57.5 and is among the top 10 teams in interceptions thrown, with 8 to their name.
