NFL has upheld its initial one-game suspension imposed on Mike Evans as a result of his involvement in an on-field altercation with New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore last week. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will now officially be without star wide receiver Mike Evans for their Week 3 game against the Green Bay Packers.

James Thrash, a former NFL wide receiver who was jointly chosen by the NFL and the NFLPA, heard Evans’ appeal on Tuesday.

Evans’ suspension without pay is as a result of “violations of unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct rules,” according to the league’s judgement.

Here is the NFL’s press release from their decision to suspend Evans:

NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan issued the suspension for a violation of Rule 12, Section 2, Article 8(G) which prohibits “unnecessarily running, diving into, cutting, or throwing the body against or on a player who is out of the play or should not have reasonably anticipated such contact by an opponent, before or after the ball is dead,” as well as Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 which prohibits any act which is “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”

Through his first eight seasons, Evans has been one of the most successful wide receivers in NFL history. In each of his eight years in the league, he had more than 1,000 receiving yards.

With Brady as his quarterback over the past two seasons, Evans has amassed 1,041 yards on 144 catches and 27 touchdowns. The 13 and 14 touchdowns in 2020 and 2021, respectively with Brady, were his career high totals.

Evans’ absence is unquestionably a setback for Brady and the Buccaneers’ offence. For Week 3’s game against the Green Bay Packers, the team might be missing two of its top wider receivers, Evans and Chris Godwin because of an injury.
