An Olympic village resident, whose identity has not been revealed, will not be allowed to any Games venue as his credentials were taken away after he went on an unauthorised sightseeing trip, according to CNN. Revoking the resident’s credentials formally, Olympic officials have called the action “unacceptable”. 

“[The person banned] will not be allowed to enter any Tokyo 2020 venues,” Tokyo 2020 spokesman Masa Takaya told reporters during a press conference Saturday.

Takaya did reveal nationality of the person involved, or whether they are an athlete or staff member.

According to the International Olympic Committees COVID-19 ‘playbook,’ sightseeing is a violation and it breaches restrictions on movement, which have been placed on participating athletes and staff.

The Games were delayed by a year and have been organised with restrictions to stop the spread of deadly coronavirus. The staff and participants are suppose to follow a series of strict protocols to prevent the Games from becoming a super-spreader event. They are tested regularly and over 50% of them are vaccinated. Nobody is allowed to venture outside Olympic venues or use public transport. All the events are being played with spectators and the opening ceremony was also a watered down event.

Ever since the Games began on July 23, this is the first reported case of breach of the protocols.

Meanwhile, Japan on Saturday extended the state of emergency in other provinces, including Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa, Osaka, and Okinawa Prefectures. Tokyo was already under the state of emergency. The rule will be in effect till August 31. The office of PM took has asked people to avoid going out or traveling for non-essential reasons.
