Tim McCarver, the All-Star catcher and Hall of Fame broadcaster, died Thursday morning in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was with his family. McCarver’s death was announced by the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He spent 21 years in Major League, collecting two World Series rings with the St Louis Cardinals in 1964 and 1967.

Tim McCarver, full name James Timothy McCarver, was born on October 16, 1941 in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. He was 81.

Career

Tim McCarver played professional baseball for 21 years then became one of the game’s most admired broadcasters. During his career, Tim played for several teams in the MLB including the St Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Montreal Expos and the Boston Red Sox. While working as a broadcaster for Fox Sports he called dozens of World Series and All-Star games. He has won three Emmys for his broadcasting work.

In 1959, at age 17, McCarver signed with the St Louis Cardinals and made his major-major league debut for them that year. While working as a broadcaster for Fox Sports he called dozens of World Series and All-Star games. He has won three Emmys for his broadcasting work. He started as a regular broadcaster for Phillies’ games on WPHL-TV in 1980, working alongside Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn, He would work there through 1982.

McCarver called a then-threat 23 World Series and 20 All-Star Games. In 2012, he was named the recipient of the Ford C Frick Award for broadcasting. In 2016, he was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the St Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2017.

Family

McCarver married his high school girlfriend, Anne McDaniel, on December 29, 1964. The couple had two daughters Kelly McCarver, and Kathy McCarver.

Cause of death

McCarver’s death was announced by baseball’s Hall of Fame, which said he died Thursday morning due to heart failure.
