World number five Rafael Nadal beat world number one and 2021 French Open champion Novak Djokovic 6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6(4) in June 2022, to progress to semis in a tournament that would eventually see him crowned champion.
Nadal went on to beat Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who suffered an unfortunate injury, in the semis to progress to the finals, where he faced Norway’s Casper Ruud, who reached his first Grand Slam final by defeating Croatia’s Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
In the final, Ruud was defeated by his idol Nadal, who made history with the 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 win.
The victory took the Spaniard’s total number of Grand Slam titles to 22, two more than fellow greats Djokovic and Roger Federer.
It was also his 14th French Open title, a tournament in which he boasts a perfect record, having won all 14 finals he has progressed to.
“Merci. First of all, Casper. It is a pleasure to play a final with you . I would like to congratulate you for an amazing tournament and career so far. I wish you all the best for the future,” Nadal said after the win.
“For me. It’s hard to describe the feelings I have. I would not believe I would be here at 36. It means a lot, it means a lot of energy to keep going. I just want to say, thank you Paris. I don’t know what can happen in the future but I am going to keep fighting to try to keep going,” the Spaniard added, commenting on what lies ahead of him.
