Former MLB pitcher Anthony Varvaro died in a car crash on Sunday as he was heading for his work in New York where he was assigned as a police officer in the  Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Atlanta Braves, where he played from 2011-14, announced the news on Twitter.

Varvaro was married to Kerry Thomson since 2011. The couple had four children together. 

Anthony Varvaro was drafted in the 12th round of the 2005 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners. He played in the team’s rookie-level affiliate side, Peoria Mariners in the next year, his first full professional season. 

Varvaro was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Braves on January 13, 2011. In his four years as a player for the Braves, he had a 2.99 ERA. 

Varvaro was traded to the Boston Red Sox on December 17, 2014, in exchange for minor leaguer Aaron Kurcz. He allowed five runs in 11 innings for the Red Sox before being designated for assignment on April 29, 2015. On May 3, he was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs.

After the Cubs discovered that the player had a torn flexor tendon in his pitching hand, the right one, he was returned to the Red Sox and undergo surgery to repair his injured body part. 

After announcing his retirement in 2015, he Began police training with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and was subsequently hired In December 2016.
