On Sunday morning, the National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for many counties in the Chicago metropolitan area. An advisory is in effect for Cook County until Sunday at 3:15 p.m. This is a life-threatening condition, according to the National Weather Service, and advises limited travel.

The Stevenson Motorway is seeing the worst problems, with officials being forced to restrict both sides of traffic due to floods near Pulaski Avenue. The Illinois Department of Transportation started hauling out at least 10 cars that were submerged in the floodwaters one at a time, according to ISP.

According to Illinois State Police, at this moment, all outbound traffic is being detoured onto Kedzie, and all incoming traffic is being detoured onto Pulaski.

Flooding has caused the Eisenhower Motorway to be totally closed on both sides near Des Plaines Avenue in Forest Park. IDOT personnel are on the site attempting to uncover drains to clear water from the road. Des Plaines Avenue is being used as a diversion, and traffic is being allowed to re-enter the roadway at Harlem Avenue on the incoming side.

Another area of worry, according to Illinois officials and Total Traffic, is the inbound Edens Motorway, where flooding has been observed immediately after Lawrence Avenue. Standing water on the road has caused traffic to slow down between Cicero Avenue and Montrose Avenue, according to officials. According to the NWS, affected areas might receive at least 1 to 3 inches of rain.

Due to track issues, the CTA Pink Line has also been temporarily suspended between Pulaski and 54th/Cermak. Due to the weather on Sunday, both NASCAR and the Chicago Cubs had to postpone their respective sporting events. Finally, NASCAR announced that the XFinity Series will not be resumed.

On the Kennedy Expressway’s outgoing side, close to the Diversey exit, flooding was recorded, leaving at least one car trapped due to standing water. Flooding is also a problem on the Bishop Ford Expressway’s inbound side, where lanes between Sibley Boulevard and 103rd Street are affected. There is currently stop-and-go traffic between Steel Bridge and 115th Street, according to reports.
