On Friday afternoon when a school bus carrying approximately 30 passengers rolled over on Idaho 55 highway, just north of Banks. The accident resulted in injuries to 11 passengers, seven of whom were in critical condition.
The event prompted a swift response from Idaho State Police, emergency services, and medical personnel, who worked tirelessly to rescue and transport the injured to local hospitals. According to a news release by the Idaho State Police, the accident occurred near milepost 84 at approximately 3 p.m. The school bus belonged to the Treasure Valley YMCA summer camp and was carrying children aged between 13 and 18 years old. The young passengers, numbering around 30, were on their way to a summer camp adventure when the unfortunate incident took place.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, and all available resources were deployed to aid the victims. The injured passengers were quickly transported to local hospitals by air and ground ambulances. This mass casualty incident prompted healthcare facilities, such as Saint Alphonsus Health System and St. Luke’s, to be on high alert, with staff preparing to receive and treat the injured.
As the injured were rushed to hospitals, the Idaho 55 highway was shut down from milepost 79 to 97, spanning from Banks to Smiths Ferry, causing significant disruption to traffic flow. The closure remained in effect for several hours until authorities could investigate the accident scene and remove the wreckage.
The school bus involved in the crash was one of four buses en route to the summer camp, and fortunately, the other three buses were not affected by the accident. Officials from the YMCA and law enforcement worked diligently to notify the families of the young victims and provide them with the necessary support and information during this difficult time.
