Some parents can go to great lengths to keep their children off social media in order to limit their screen time. Six years ago, a mother from the US promised her son a reward for his 18th birthday if he stayed away from social media.

Lorna Goldstrand Klefsaas from Minnesota offered her son Sivert Klefsaas $1,800 for the challenge that began in 2016. The teenager kept his word and got richer by $1,800 on his 18th birthday after collecting the reward cheque from his mom.

“Being 12, I didn’t really have that great of a concept of money yet. So, I was like, ‘Oh sick, yeah, absolutely,” said Sivert in an interview after completing the challenge.

Lorna posted a photo of Sivert on her Facebook profile and wrote that her son can now have accounts on various social media platforms.

“Six years ago I offered Sivert $1,800 to stay off social media until he was 18. Even though $1,800 is a lot more to a 12-year-old than it is to an 18-year-old. He has stuck to our deal. He turns 18 tomorrow. He will have $1,800 in his pocket and new accounts on Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter,” wrote Lorna.

“He was like ‘I’m not breaking this.’ I’m proud of him because there were a few times where it was hard,” Lorna said.

This idea of social media abstinence came to Lorna after she watched her elder daughter struggle during her teenage years.

“She got so obsessed with keeping up her Snapchat streaks that it was really affecting her mood. It was affecting her friendships,” Lorna told KARE 11 in an interview.
