Several gunmen opened fire on a throng of onlookers on a West Philadelphia street overnight, shooting seven people—one fatally.

According to Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore, the incident happened in the 500 block of North Creighton Street at roughly 1:30 in the morning. He claimed that the victims’ ages ranged from 19 to 51.

Vanore said that while police were still gathering information and evidence to better understand what occurred, several witnesses described the incident as a “shoot-out” at a block party or barbeque on the rowhouse street.

Prior to the start of the shooting, at least 100 people were outside celebrating a birthday, a woman who lives on the block claimed in an interview.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, added, “It was a great party — they were dancing, drinking, and having fun, and suddenly these knuckleheads [started fire].”

According to Vanore, one of the casualties, a 19-year-old guy, was declared dead early on Saturday. In order to notify the man’s family, he chose not to reveal his name.

He continued, mentioning that each of the five female survivors was said to be in stable health.

The turmoil from the previous night had mostly disappeared by late Saturday morning, and locals were reluctant to talk about what had transpired. On the sidewalk, a few chalk outlines indicating the locations of retrieved fired cartridge shells could still be seen. A bullet hole caused at least one resident’s window to break. Also, a few party balloons were still swaying in the wind.

The woman who witnessed the party claimed she was inside her home when shots were fired. She claimed that she initially didn’t recognise the gunshot cracks as gunshots, but by the time she heard the third shot, “I hit the floor.”
