Answer: Trikonasana

Trikonasana, also known as Utthita Trikonasana, literally meaning Extended Triangle Pose, is a standing asana in yoga.

The asana was first described in the 20th century, in the teachings of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, including his book ‘Yoga Makaranda’ (1934) and in the works of his students.

The asana is said to help relieve stress, improve digestion, and stimulate the abdominal organs. It is also said to help with posture, namely, for avoiding a hunch, especially for breastfeeding mothers. It also helps practitioners burn excess fat and lose weight.

That being said, various schools of yoga have different views on what Trikonasana is and whether there is a difference between Trikonasana and Utthita Trikonasana.

For instance, in a 2001 article in the ‘Yoga Journal’ with instructions from teachers from five prominent traditions of yoga, namely, Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Kripalu Yoga, Sivananda Yoga, and Bikram Yoga, there was no distinction drawn between Trikonasana and Utthita Trikonasana.

In contrast, the tradition of Satyananda Yoga holds that Trikonasana comprises five different asanas performed in sequence.

While differences do exist about what Trikonasana is, there are common variations to be found, with Parivritta Trikonasana (Revolved Triangle Pose) being a quite common one.

Other variations of the Trikonasana include the Baddha Trikonasana (Bound Triangle Pose), the Baddha Parivritta Trikonasana (Bound Revolved Triangle Pose), the Supta Trikonasana (Reclining Triangle Pose) and the Supta Parivritta Trikonasana (Reclining Revolved Triangle Pose).
