UAE’s Karthik Meiyappan managed to get a hattrick of wickets at the ongoing T20 World Cup when his side faced off against Sri Lanka in their Group A match. Although the Lankans won the match, they are currently struggling at the bottom of the group table. Lanka’s collapse (they earlier lost a match to Namibia) comes as a shock to many cricket fans since they are the defending Asia Cup champions.
Meiyappan, who is 22 years of age, took the wickets of Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka and Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka for his hattrick in the 15th over of the match that took place at Geelong’s Kardinia Park.
OptaJim reported on Twitter that Meiyappan “has become the first player from an associate member side and fifth bowler overall to bag a hat-trick in a men’s T20 World Cup match”.
The first scalp the youngster registered was of Rajapaksa. The batter’s shot at deep cover resulted in him getting caught out. The next wicket, that of Asalanka, came from the batter edging a ball by the legspinner to the wicketkeeper, who caught him out. The last wicket, which saw Nissanka depart, came from a googly that bowled out the opposition captain.
Meiyappan’s bowling performance was not backed by the UAE batters, who were bowled out for a mere 73.
