Black Adam, played by Dwayne Johnson, maybe the main character in the upcoming DC film of the same name, but he’s not the only one making his theatrical premiere after being first introduced in the comics decades ago.
The Justice Society of America, whose members include Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell’s Cyclone, Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman, and Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate, is also being introduced by Black Adam. Director of Black Adam Jaume Collet-Serra spoke about the JSA’s resident sorcerer and why Brosnan was the ideal choice for the role of Doctor Fate in the DC Extended Universe.
Doctor Fate, who was originally portrayed by Kent Nelson in the comic books and was previously portrayed in a live-action setting by Brent Stait in Smallville, will be played by Pierce Brosnan. While Brosnan is no stranger to action-packed work because of his time working on the James Bond films, Doctor Fate largely uses spell-casting to deal with his opponents.
In addition, Doctor Fate has “raw charisma,” according to Jaume Collet-Serra, who also told Vanity Fair that while Kent can’t match Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam in raw strength, he might be able to reason with him. To that end, Serra offered the justification given below as to why Brosnan was such a great fit for the part:
“You need a special actor to play, basically, a legend. Dr. Fate is a very powerful being, so you need someone like Pierce who can play powerful without it being overly done. He can do it in a very subtle way. I mean, he’s one of the coolest people in the world—he was James Bond! But as a person, he’s magnetic, so warm with such gravitas.”
