Daniil Sergeyevich Medvedev is a Russian professional tennis player. In a shocking upset at the US Open, the 26-year-old player from Moscow was beaten by Australian Nick Kyrgios in the fourth round, after losing 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6. 

Medvedev won his first Grand Slam last year but the loss to Kyrgios means that he must cede his title as World No 1 when the US Open being held in New York ends. 

The hardcourt player was born on 11 February 1996 in Moscow. His journey with tennis began when he was six years old when he saw an advertisement for group tennis coaching. With the encouragement of his father, Medvedev joined the classes.

In school, he excelled at physics and maths and graduated early. Medvedev went on enroll at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations where he studied economics and commerce but decided to drop out to focus on tennis. He switched schools to earn a diploma as a coach before moving to Antibes, France in order to continue his training at a tennis academy. 

Medvedev entered his first competition at the age of 13 in 2009 at a tournament in Estonia, winning his first title in 2010. Between October 2012 and July 2013, the junior player won six titles. In 2014, he reached his junior career ranking high at World No. 13. he ended his junior career with a win-loss record of 109–43. 

As a player, Medvedev has a very fast serve given his height and handspan. He is known to play long, flat groundstrokes in an effort to wear down his opponents with long rallies.
