Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, or BMW, is a German multinational automobile and motorbike manufacturer located in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The company was created in 1916 with the intention of producing aeroplane engines, which it did from 1917 to 1918 and again from 1933 to 1945.
Automobiles are promoted under the BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce brands, while motorcycles are advertised under the BMW Motorrad brand. BMW was the fourteenth-largest automaker in the world in 2017, producing 2,279,503 automobiles. The firm has a long history in motorsport, particularly in touring vehicles, sports cars, and the Isle of Man TT.
BMW is based in Munich and manufactures automobiles in Germany, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Following acquisitions by the brothers Herbert and Harald Quandt in 1959, which saved the company from insolvency, the Quandt family has been a long-term shareholder of the company (with the remaining shares owned by the public float).
The BMW logo or roundel evolved from the circular Rapp Motorenwerke corporate emblem, which included a black ring with the company name surrounding the company logo, on a plinth with a couped horse’s head.
BMW kept Rapp’s black ring marked with the company name, but added a circular outer sheath with a quasi-heraldic reference to the coat of arms (and flag) of the Free State of Bavaria (as the state of their origin was renamed after 1918), being the arms of the House of Wittelsbach, Dukes, and Kings of Bavaria.
However, because the use of state coats of arms or other emblems of sovereignty on business logos was prohibited by local trademark law, the design was significantly differentiated to conform while retaining the tinctures azure (blue) and argent (white).
The current logo iteration was released in 2020, and it removed the 3D elements that had been used in renderings of the design, as well as the black outline enclosing the rondel. The emblem will appear on BMW branding but will not appear on automobiles.
