Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Württemberg, Germany. Six weeks later, the family relocated to Munich, where he began his education at the Luitpold Gymnasium. Later, they relocated to Italy, and Albert continued his schooling in Aarau, Switzerland, where he enrolled in the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich in 1896 to train as a physics and mathematics teacher. He obtained Swiss citizenship in 1901, the year he received his diploma, and, unable to find a teaching position, he landed a job as a technical assistant in the Swiss Patent Office. He received his doctorate in 1905.

He created much of his extraordinary work while working at the Patent Office and in his leisure time, and he was appointed Privatdozent in Berne in 1908. In 1909, he was appointed Professor Extraordinary at Zurich, and in 1911, he was appointed Professor of Theoretical Physics in Prague before returning to Zurich the following year to occupy a similar position. He was appointed Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Physical Institute and Professor of Physics at the University of Berlin in 1914. He became a German citizen in 1914 and lived in Berlin until 1933, when he relinquished his citizenship for political concerns and immigrated to the United States to take a position as Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton. In 1940, he became a citizen of the United States and retired from his position.
