Answer: Cairo

The Cairo Citadel is also known as the Citadel of Saladin. A medieval Islamic-era fortification in Cairo, Egypt, it was built by Salah ad-Din and later developed by Egyptian rulers. It was once the seat of government in Egypt and the residence of Egyptian rulers for 700 years, from the 13th to the 19th centuries.

At the time of its foundation, the Cairo Citadel was the most ambitious military projects in the world. Now, it is a preserved historic site which hosts mosques and museums.

The Citadel underwent major redevelopment work during the Mamluk Sultanate, culminating in the projects of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad in the 14th Century. In the 19th Century, Muhammad Ali Pasha demolished many of the older buildings and built new palaces and monuments all across the site, giving it much of its present form. The British occupation used it as a garrison in the 20th century.

In 1976, UNESCO proclaimed the Cairo Cathedral a World Heritage Site.
