The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most recognizable global landmarks but wasn’t initially planned that way. The bell tower began to sink on one side since Pisa has soft subsoil, and the tower’s foundation was heavy.
Construction was halted for almost a century when the builders realized their mistake, but making the arches and columns taller on the other side didn’t fix the problem.
Interestingly, dictator Benito Mussolini considered the tower an example of flawed construction, which it was, and a disgrace to Italy. He wanted to fix it by having holes drilled in the base, which would then be injected with grout and cement to solidify the base. However, it just made the base heavier, and the tower leaned more, though it is stable now.
