Madurai’s Meenakshi Temple, which is located in the state of Tamil Nadu, is popularly known as the hall of thousand pillars.
Ayiramkal Mandapam, which is the largest mandapam inside the complex of the holy South Indian temple, was constructed in 1569 by Ariyanatha Mudaliyar, who was a minister and the commander of Viswanatha Naicker.
The mandapam has 985 pillars in total, which have been so symmetrically arranged that they appear in perfect rows from every angle. In the middle of the mandapam lies the holy idol of Lord Natarajar’s Chira Sabha.
At the entrance lies a structure of a heroic figure on a horse. According to legend, it is the idol of Ariyanatha Mudaliyar, the man who built the mandapam. However, some believe that it is the idol of Lord Sundareswarar who possessed the power of transforming foxes into horses. Several sculptures of Lord Shiva, Kannapar, and Pichadanar are also placed inside the temple.
