In the Palestinian territories, between 80,000 and 100,000 households still rely on olives and their oil as their main or secondary source of income.
The sector generates around 70% of the region’s fruit production and about 14% of its economic output. The fact that these resilient trees are so frequently depicted in Palestinian literature and art, even in the far-flung diaspora, may not come as a surprise given their significance as metaphors for stability at a time of upheaval, independence in difficult circumstances, and peace throughout wartime.
