The Kukrail Forest will see India’s first night safari park after the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved the proposal on August 17, 2022.
The forest covers 2027 hectare and will include a zoological garden and the night safari park. The zoo will be spread over 150 acres while the night safari will take up 350 acres of space.
The point of the new night safari is to promote ecotourism in the state in addition to providing locals with employment. The minister of tourism, Jaiveer Singh said that the new zoo would replace the existing one in Lucknow. He went on to say that the proposed night safari was an “ambitious project” and that a consultant would be hired to survey the land and provide an assessment.
As part of the state government’s attempt to boost tourism 56 other destinations have been identified as part of the One District, One Destination scheme. According to the new programme, a destination in each district that can be branded as an ecotourism spot will be identified by the government to attract nature enthusiasts.
While the state already has several ecotourism spots, the new night safari will be the first in India. In addition, the state’s tiger reserves, wetlands and wildlife sanctuaries tend to draw bigger crowds.
However, work on the project will only begin after it receives clearance from every level of governance, according to a report from the Times of India. However, final say regarding the zoo and night safari projects will lie in the hands of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
