Slalom skiing is a sub-category of Alpine skiing, where athletes ski through poles known as gates. Alpine skiing consists of 5 events namely downhill skiing, super giant slalom, giant slalom, slalom and combined. Both men and women compete in these events. The International Ski federation (ISF) first recognised downhill racing in 1930 with the first world championships for men’s downhill and Slalom events being held in 1931.
In Slalom skiing, competitors are required to ski down a slope of 180-220m for men while 140-180 m for women. Skiers have to compulsorily pass through gates which may have a width of 4-6mts. Slalom skiers need to pass through 2 courses to reach the final gate.
The competitor amongst all who consumes the least combined time for both courses shall be declared the winner. Though Alpine skiing had been introduced as early as 1936 in Olympic games, Slalom skiing was introduced in the 1948 Winter Olympics at St Moritz, Switzerland.
Swiss skier Edy Reinalter was the first men’s Winter Olympics gold medallist in 1948. On the women’s front, Gretchen Fraser of the USA was the first women’s Winter gold medallist.
In the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics games, there are 11 events in the Alpine skiing category. India’s Mohammed Arif Khan from Jammu and Kashmir, a national and south Asian champion in Slalom, became the first Indian athlete to earn a spot in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Later, Khan set the bar even higher by also qualifying for the giant slalom event in the Olympics.
