Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and a former prime minister of Pakistan, was injured on Thursday at a Long March rally in Wazirabad, Punjab Province, when a shooter opened fire at his campaign truck.

Despite allegedly having leg injuries, Khan was reported to be in no immediate danger. According to local sources, those hurt included Khan and a few party heavyweights, including Faisal Javed Khan

Former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram, a member of the 1992 World Cup-winning Pakistani team led by Khan, tweeted, “Deeply disturbed about events unfolding in Wazirabad. Our prayers with Imran bhai and everyone there. We as a country must come together and not allow anyone to distort national unity.”

“Strongly condemn this heinous attack on @ImranKhanPTI. May Allah keep Kaptaan safe and protect our beloved Pakistan, Ameen,” Babar Azam tweeted. Azam is the current captain of the Pakistani cricket team, across all formats.

Shoaib Akhtar, a former Pakistani pacer, also posted a poignant video message for Khan in which he condemned the assault.

“Heard about the attack on Imran Khan. Alhamdolillah he is fine and in good spirits. This clip of him is from after the attack. I strongly condemn the attack,” Akhtar posted.

Mohammad Hafeez, another former Pakistani cricketer tweeted, “Strongly condemn the attack on @ImranKhanPTI. May he stay safe & get well soon. Aameen.”

It was not immediately known who the shooter was who was detained on the site. The shooting has not yet been attributed to any particular organisation.

As part of his campaign to compel the government to call early elections, Khan was travelling in a sizable convoy of trucks and automobiles toward the capital, Islamabad, when the incident took place, according to the police, in the Wazirabad region of the eastern Punjab province. According to reports, one person died and seven other people were hurt.
