The Hulk has been portrayed by a number of actors over the years. The first-ever on-screen version of the character was played by Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno in the TV series The Incredible Hulk, which came out in 1978. The duo continued playing the character in the TV movies The Incredible Hulk Returns (1988) and The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989).
Eric Bana of Troy fame essayed the green monster in the 2003 film, Hulk, which was directed by Academy Award-winner, Ang Lee. This film was, however, outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) canon.
Edward Norton was the first actor to play Hulk in the MCU, which he did in the 2008 film, The Incredible Hulk. When MCU decided to relaunch the character in the 2012 film, The Avengers, they chose Mark Ruffalo to play the role. The actor went on to portray the scientist with a bad temper in all MCU movies and TV shows henceforth. He was recently seen in the DisneyPlus series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Bruce Banner, a brilliant physicist, transformed into the Hulk after he was exposed to gamma radiation while trying to save a friend and colleague from the explosion of an experimental bomb. Since then, whenever Banner loses his temper, he transforms into the green rage machine which destroys everything in its path.
