Vinesh Phogat is the only Indian woman wrestler to win multiple medals at the World Wrestling Championships. Moreover, she is the first Indian athlete to be nominated for Laureus World Sports Awards in 2019. She is one of the Phogat sisters who made historical wins in the history of Indian women wrestlers. The 28-year-old wrestler is 5 feet 3 inches tall and currently weighs around 53 kg. She has been actively wrestling since 2013. In the year 2021, she won a gold medal fighting against Canada’s Diana Mary Helen Weicker in Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series, by 4-0. Recently, she bagged a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in the category of women’s 53 kg, which was held in Birmingham, England.
In her professional career, Vinesh Phogat, the daughter of wrestler Rajpal Phogat, has won several matches and won medals. She earned a bronze medal in her first world championship in 2019. Before that, she won Gold in the Asian Games and in Commonwealth Games in 2018, she made it to the 50 kg category. The Indian wrestler was born in the Charkhi Dadri district of Haryana, on August 25, 1994. She belongs to a family of successful wrestlers, where her cousins – Babita and Ritu, are also international-level wrestling champions. Vinesh was coached by her uncle Mahavir Singh Phogat and later, by Woller Akos.
The professional wrestler, Vinesh, has also been honoured with titles like Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (2020), Arjuna Award (2016), and Padma Shri (2018). Belonging to a society where girls are not allowed to pursue their careers, the Phogat sisters have always embarked on the impossible, making India feel proud.
Phogat is married to her boyfriend and fellow wrestler Somvir Rathee whom she met while working for Indian Railways.
