Answer: Maharashtra

The Nandur Madhmeshwar Bird Sanctuary is located in Niphad Tehsil in Nashik District, often known as Maharashtra’s Bharatpur.

It is a Ramsar Site and the first Ramsar site in Maharashtra.

Nandur Madhameshwar wetland in Niphad tehsil of Nashik district has been designated as a Ramsar wetland by the International Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. This is the state’s first wetland and one of thirty-eight wetlands in India designated as Ramsar sites by the Convention on January 27, just days before International Wetlands Day on February 2. “Nandur Madhmeshwar wetland has been formed by shallow backwaters of Nandur Madhmeshwar dam and is known as Maharashtra ‘s Bharatpur. It lies in the 100 sq km Nandur Madhameshwar sanctuary formed in 1986,” said Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Nitin Kakodkar.

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, Particularly as Waterfowl Habitat, is an international convention that aims to conserve and sustainably use wetlands. It is also known as the Wetlands Convention. It was named after the Iranian city of Ramsar, where the treaty was signed in 1971.

Every three years, representatives of the contracting parties convene at the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP), the convention’s policy-making organ, to adopt decisions (resolutions and recommendations) to administer the convention’s work and improve the parties’ ability to implement its objectives. In 2015, COP12 was held in Punta del Este, Uruguay. In October 2018, COP13 was convened in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

At Nandur Madhmeshwar, a stone pickup is built across the Godavari. As a result, a diverse environment for biological diversity has emerged. Many plant species, including Babul, Tamarind, Neem, Jamun, Vilayati, Maharukh, Pangara, Mango, and Eucalyptus, can be found here, as well as certain aquatic plant species.
