Gillian Anderson secured the accolade for the best-supporting actress in a drama series for her performance in the television show ‘The Crown’. Anderson played the role of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the show.

Before Anderson received her award on Sunday, the renowned Netflix show had already made a strong start at the event after bagging two awards.

Anderson, a veteran actor, collected her first-ever Emmy Award more than two decades ago for the project ‘The X-Files’. Sunday’s award was the 53-year-old’s second Emmy.

She beat out her ‘The Crown’ castmates Helena Bonham Carter and Emerald Fennell, along with Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, Aunjanue Ellis, Yvonne Strahovski and Samira Wiley, AP reported.

The show won multiple accolades on Sunday in a variety of departments that ranged from the direction, writing and acting. While English actor Tobias Menzies outstanding supporting actor in a drama series for the role of Prince Philip, Peter Morgan has won the 2021 Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding writing. 

The award for outstanding directing for a drama series was taken away by television director Jessica Hobbs at the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards.

Netflix’s historical drama focuses on the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It begins in 1947, the period of Elizabeth’s marriage with Philip. Each season new characters are incorporated in order to make up for the ageing process and time periods

As per media reports, a guest list of 500-odd nominees has been made for the Emmys to gather in the venue’s outdoor section, under strict pandemic precautions including proof of inoculation.  Angela Bassett, Michael Douglas, Dolly Parton, and Awkwafina are among the presenters. 

“Making that level of celebrities ill is not on our agenda,” Emmys producer Ian Stewart told Variety, nonetheless promising a “fun, ritzy party” for those who clear security.

The 73rd edition of the Emmys kicked off on Sunday, 19 September.
