Thor: Love and Thunder‘ shows the Asgardian taking the fight to Gorr the God Butcher in the final moments of the movie. After losing the initial bout in the Shadow Realm, and having Christian Bale’s character get his hands on Stormbreaker, Thor flies off to save the kidnapped Asgardian children and stop Gorr from reaching Eternity, where he plans to make a wish to kill all gods.

Armed with Zeus’ lightning bolt, Thor frees Axl and the kids, but Gorr summons shadow creatures to slow down the God of Thunder. Hopelessly outmatched, Thor has only one choice – to make a warrior out of the ragtag group of children.

He gives them a speech and puts Heimdall’s son, Axl, in charge. While many might raise eyebrows at the Asgardian commanding a child army, the scene is more akin to children banding together to help an authority figure, as seen in Harry Potter when they came up with the idea of Dumbledore’s army.

The Asgardian children have their hearts in the right place and follow Thor’s instructions, picking up whatever weapons they can lay their hands on. One child even holds up a stuffed animal.

Thor then repeats the incantation Odin placed on Mjolnir, saying whosoever holds the weapon shall possess the power of Thor. The God of Thunder is careful to mention that this power shall belong to the children for a “limited time only”.

Since the Asgardian hasn’t displayed this power earlier in the movies, one theory is that wielding Zeus’ weapon allowed Thor to focus his power and execute the incantation. The fact that the children’s eyes turned yellow, instead of Thor’s normal blue, seems to lend credibility to this theory.

With the children handling the shadow creatures, Thor’s free to brawl with Gorr. Once he gets Stormbreaker loose, Thor throws it to Axl, who grabs it effortlessly, and gets the children to safety with the help of the Bifrost.
