What is blunt chest trauma?

A blunt chest trauma is a sudden or violent injury to the chest caused by tremendous pressure.

Clinical analysis of blunt trauma demonstrated that all thoracic structures, including the diaphragm, heart, ribs, lung, pleura, major arteries, and thoracic cage, can sustain damage. Chest wall injury, which also involves rib fractures, is the most frequent injury in blunt thoracic trauma.

When three or more contiguous ribs are fractured into at least two pieces, this condition is known as a flail chest. A flail chest basically happens when a section of the chest wall separates from the remainder of the chest wall. The chest wall paradoxically moves in different directions during inspiration and expiration when the flail segment loses continuity, as per the Chinese Journal of Traumatology.

A blunt trauma is classified as a non-penetrating injury that typically results from a severe fall and can cause a number of pulmonary, cardiovascular, and orthopedic issues.

Blunt Chest Trauma refers to an intense amount of pressure applied to the chest without piercing or entering the body’s tissue. The patient may experience difficulties including contusions, abrasions, bone fractures, and internal hemorrhages as a result. A myocardial contusion is one of the most frequent effects of acute chest trauma when it comes to cardiac issues.

This may potentially result in a little arrhythmia and a serious chamber or valvular rupture after the accident, as per Dr. Bimal Chhajer, cardiologist and founder of SAOOL.
