Answer: March 31

The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in late-March 2022 announced the end of all COVID-19 containment measures.

“After taking into consideration the overall improvement in the situation and preparedness of the government to deal with the pandemic, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has taken a decision that there may not be any further need to invoke provisions of the DM Act for COVID containment measures,” Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said, announcing the end of containment measures from March 31, 2022.

“I would, therefore, advise all states and UTs to consider appropriately discontinuing the issue of orders and guidelines under the DM Act, 2005 for Covid containment measures,” Bhalla added, urging a return to normalcy.

However, the Home Secretary urged everyone to be wary and take appropriate precautions since the coronavirus was still at large and still contagious.

The Central government had, for the first time, introduced COVID-19 containment measures under the Disaster Management Act (2005) on March 24, 2020. After their introduction, these COVID-19 containment measures were modified and updated from time to time to suit requirements but had not been entirely scrapped till the government’s announcement of the same two years later in March 2022.
