Matrimonial ads in India frequently make headlines due to their unusual choices and peculiar demands. One such strange matrimonial ad has become an internet sensation.

An undated newspaper ad seeking a groom for a 24-year-old, mentions that they are looking for a “fair beautiful MBA girl from Rich Family Business Background”,  who must be an “IAS/IPS, Working Doctor (PG), Industrialists/Businessman from the same caste”

What distinguishes this casual casteist advertisement is that it specifically mentions they are not willing to accept proposals from software engineers. The ad expresses this preference by saying, “Software engineers, do not call.”

Samir Arora (@Iamsamirarora), the founding member of Helios Capital, a financial consultancy company based in Mumbai, posted a picture of this advertisement on Twitter on September 16. He humorously captioned the post,  “Future of IT does not look so sound”. The tweet has received over 4,000 likes.

Twitter reactions

A Twitter user commented on this post, saying, “Unfortunately or fortunately, these software engineers earn more than an IAS/IPS and can change jobs if they don’t like their boss.” “There is one special thing about this advertisement,” said another. It does not talk about, complexion, height et al. “

This is certainly not the first time a matrimonial ad has made headlines due to its bizarre demands. In 2020, another ad went viral for looking for a bride who is “extremely patriotic” and has a “keen desire” to help India’s “military and sports capabilities.”

Last year, another matrimonial ad posted on Betterhalf.a went viral for all the wrong reasons. The ad stated 13 specific values and demands the groom is looking for in a “perfect” bride, ranging from ‘conservative’, ‘liberal’, and ‘pro-life,’ values to the desired bra, waist and feet sizes.
