Amid the controversy around Facebook India, its managing director Ajit Mohan appeared before a parliamentary panel on Wednesday, PTI reported. Facebook India is embroiled in a controversy after the Wall Street Journal published a report, according to which the social media giant ignored applying its hate-speech rules to politicians of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology called representatives of Facebook on Wednesday to hear their views “on the subject of safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space,” according to agenda of the meeting, PTI reported.
It has also called representatives of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on the same issue.
The panel is headed by Congress‘ Shashi Tharoor, who recently engaged in a spat with BJP members, over the Wall Street Journal report.
He announced that the panel would like to hear from Facebook about the report.
BJP’s Nishikant Dubey, who is also a member in the panel, alleged that the Congress leader has been using the panel’s platform to further his and his party’s political agenda. He even demanded Tharoor’s removal as chairman.
On Monday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted on the issue. “International media have fully exposed Facebook’s & WhatsApp’s brazen assault on India’s democracy & social harmony,” Gandhi tweeted along with the snapshots of the report.
“No one, let alone a foreign company, can be allowed to interfere in our nation’s affairs. They must be investigated immediately & when found guilty, punished,” he added.
Meanwhile, Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad wrote to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, accusing Facebook India of bias.
