Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker, 30, did not manage to save a single goal during the penalty shootout between his side and against Croatia. Becker has been instrumental in Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League successes in recent times, but failed to show up when it mattered for his national side.

This loss means the five-time winners of the tournament have now been knocked out of the World Cup from the quarterfinals on two consecutive occasions, losing their 2018

Who is Alisson Becker?

Alisson Becker, whose full name is Álisson Ramsés Becker, was born on October 2, 1992. His elder brother, Muriel Gustavo Becker, is also a goalkeeper and plays for Internacional. He was born in Novo Hamburgo, a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Becker also started his career at Internacional, and then moved on to Roma. His exploits in Italy brought him to the notice of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp who signed him in 2018 for a then world record fee for a goalkeeper,  £66.8 million.

The 2019 Champions League winner joined Roma in 2016, but could not get much game time since Poland’s Wojciech Szczęsny was their main goalkeeper. However, he got a chance to prove his mettle in the following season when Szczęsny joined Juventus. In the 2017-18 season, Alisson was declared the Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year.

He joined Liverpool the next season and immediately made an impact, keeping back-to-back clean sheets in his first three matches.

With Liverpool Alisson won the 2019-20 Premier League, the 2021 FA Cup and EFL Cup, the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League, and the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup.

His only tournament win in national colours till date has been the 2019 Copa America.

Alisson is married to Natalia Loewe, a doctor. The duo are parents to a daughter called Helena and a son called Matteo.
