Dr. Seuss created the fictional character of the Grinch. He is best known as the protagonist in the 1957 children’s book How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Boris Karloff, Hans Conried, Bob Holt, Anthony Asbury, Jim Carrey, Rik Mayall, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Matthew Morrison have all played and voiced the character.
The Grinch is portrayed as a pot-bellied, furry, pear-shaped, snub-nosed life form with a cat-like face and a pessimistic demeanour. He is usually coloured yellow-green in full-color adaptations. He’s spent the last 53 years alone on a cliff overlooking the town of Whoville. The Grinch, in contrast to the cheerful Whos, is misanthropic, ill-natured, and mean-spirited.
The reason for this is unknown; the overwhelming view among the Whos is that he was born with a heart that was “two sizes too small.” He despises the Christmas season in specific, mentioning how upsetting the various noises of the season, along with the singing of Christmas carols, are to him.
He chooses to destroy the holiday once and for all because he can’t stand it any longer.
He diligently designs a red suit to conceal himself as Santa Claus and breaks into the Whos’ homes on Christmas Eve while they are sleeping to steal every item they own, right down to the last morsel of food they have, and dump it off of a nearby mountain with the help of his pet dog, Max.
Despite successfully completing the theft, he is surprised to hear the Whos singing cheerfully on Christmas morning, content simply to have each other. He then realises that the holiday has a deeper significance that he was previously unaware of.
Inspired, he prevents the Whos’ possessions from falling off the cliff, and his heart expands “three sizes” in the process. He gladly returns all of the gifts he stole and joins the Whos in their Christmas celebration.
