The plot on which the Foyer Du Soldat stands was originally a cemetery. The first construction on the plot happened in 1751 when a house was built on it. The then French government procured the house in 1840 and turned it into the Foyer Du Soldat, which literally translates as ‘Soldier’s Home’.
The building served as a restroom for French soldiers who took part in various wars for France in Europe and the colonies. The French flag is still kept proudly hoisted at the venue, in memory of the soldiers who fought for France over the years.
In January 2016, a permanent exhibition was installed at the Foyer Du Soldat. The exhibition displays various memorabilia, uniforms, and other objects associated with the Indian and French armies from the two World Wars.
The building is a symbol of French association with India which began in 1674, with the establishment of the first trading center of the French East India Company.
