The Hobbiton movie set is located in New Zealand. It was a primary location during the filming of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Situated in a family farm in the west of Hinuera, the set has now become a Tolkein tourism destination.
The area used to be a group of alluvial silts, sands and gravels laid down in the last glacial period. In the 19th century, it was transformed by a large-scale drainage scheme. It has since transformed into fertile agricultural land and a major racehorse breeding area.
It was Peter Jackson who found the area ahead of the filming of Lord Of The Rings. In 1998, he concluded the area was “like a slice of little England.” The location’s hills “looked as though Hobbits had already begun excavations.”
The original Hobbit set was not built to last. The hobbit hole facades have been constructed using untreated timber, ply and polystyrene.
