Boxing is also known as pugilism. Boxing first appeared on the Olympic stage more than 2,500 years ago, at the 23rd Olympiad in 688 BCE. The sport was adopted by the ancient Romans from the Greeks, and we adopted the term pugilism from them: the Latin word pugil means “boxer.” (The word is derived from the Latin pugnus, which means “fist.”)
Boxing declined in popularity as the Roman Empire declined, but it resurfaced in the 18th century. By the end of the century, pugilist and pugilism were firmly entrenched in the English lexicon, and pugilism now refers to metaphorical sparring, such as in a political debate.
Boxing is a sport that involves both amateur and professional fighters using their fists to attack and defend. Boxers typically wear padded gloves and adhere to the code outlined in the Marquess of Queensberry rules.
Boxing contestants are matched in weight and ability and attempt to land hard and frequent blows with their fists while avoiding the opponent’s blows. A boxer wins a match by outscoring his opponent (points can be tallied in a variety of ways) or by rendering his opponent unable to continue the match. Bouts typically last three minutes and range from three to twelve rounds.
