The French city and commune of Clermont-Ferrand is located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The city is well-known for the Chaîne des Puys volcano range that surrounds it, with the highest and dormant volcano Puy de Dôme visible from the city along with two communications towers.

The city was included as a “tectonic hotspot” on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2018.

The tyre company Michelin, which was founded there more than a century ago, is still based in Clermont-Ferrand. The city has 6,000 researchers and a student population of 25% became the first French city to join the UNESCO Learning City Network.

Clermont-Ferrand’s most famous site includes the public square Place de Jaude, where a grand statue of Vercingetorix riding a warhorse and brandishing a sword is located, along with its highly distinctive Gothic Cathedral made of black lava stone.

Frédéric Bartholdi, who sculpted the Statue of Liberty, also crafted this statue.
