Answer: Delhi University

The University of Delhi, also known as Delhi University (DU), is a public, collegiate university in New Delhi, India. It was established in 1922 by an Act of the Central Legislative Assembly and is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as an Institute of Eminence (IoE).

The principal tasks of a collegiate university are shared between the university’s academic departments and constituent colleges. The University of Delhi, which began with three colleges, two faculties, and 750 students, has grown to become India’s largest and one of the world’s most prominent institutions of higher learning. The university’s North and South campuses are home to 16 faculties and 86 departments. It consists of 77 constituent colleges as well as five other institutes. The university’s chancellor is the Vice President of India.

An Act of the then-Central Legislative Assembly of British India founded the Institution of Delhi in 1922 as a unitary, teaching, and residential university. From 1922 to 1926, Hari Singh Gour was the university’s first Vice-Chancellor. At the time, Delhi had only four colleges: St. Stephen’s College, founded in 1881, Hindu College, founded in 1899, Zakir Husain Delhi College (then known as The Delhi College), founded in 1792, and Ramjas College, founded in 1917, all of which were later connected with the university. Initially, the institution comprised two faculties (Arts and Science) and around 750 students.

In 1911, the seat of power in British India was moved from Calcutta to Delhi. The Viceregal Lodge Estate served as the Viceroy of India’s residence until October 1933, when it was donated to the University of Delhi. Since then, it has hosted the vice-office chancellor’s as well as other offices.

The university’s silver jubilee year in 1947 coincided with India’s independence, and Vijayendra Kasturi Ranga Varadaraja Rao hoisted the national flag for the first time in the main building. Due to India’s partition, there was no convocation ceremony that year. Instead, a special ceremony was organised in 1948, with then-Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Lord Mountbatten, Lady Mountbatten, Abul Kalam Azad, Zakir Husain, and Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar in attendance. The golden jubilee celebrations of 1973 were attended by then-Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Satyajit Ray, Amrita Pritam, and M. S. Subbulakshmi.

The Delhi University official website says the elephant in their logo “represents wisdom and sagacity.”
