Stranger Things season 2 unveiled Eleven’s biological mother as Terry Ives. Stranger Thing’s prequel novel Suspicious Minds revealed that Eleven’s father is Andrew Rich, who dated Ives during her time with MKUltra until his death in the Vietnam war. To make the matter even worse Dr Brenner steels Terry’s baby and notifies it to be a miscarriage to conceal the abduction. Terry knows her daughter is alive and makes countless efforts to get her back. Eventually finding Eleven at Dr Brenner’s lab she gets hauled away by the guards and is given electroshock to erase Eleven from her memory but she never could. Eleven is terrified to see her ‘Papa’ survive in season four and experiment on her to get her powers back. In season 4, all the children at Hawkins Laboratory call Dr Brenner ‘Papa’ even though he causes them pain.

Gwenda Bond mentions how Dr Brenner remains a villain who saw himself as the hero trying to save the world. She also mentions that considering the relationship of Terry and Dr Brenner, the scientist was ambivalent towards them. She sees Dr Brenner as a lab rat who feels nothing for the children and people in his laboratory.

‘Papa’ happens to be a name Dr Brenner is known from. It’s his way of appearing more friendly to all his subjects and to Eleven as well.
