Unruly crowd at the Lord’s Cricket Ground threw objects such as champagne bottle corks at India’s opening batsman KL Rahul during the third day of the second Test of the ongoing India’s tour of England on Saturday, leaving Indian fans irked.

Rahul was fielding near the boundary ropes during the 69th over of the English innings on Saturday when the spectators from the stands threw champagne corks at him. Indian captain Virat Kohli, who was angered by the incident, signaled Rahul to throw the corks back into the stand.

Soon, Indian fans took to social media to condemn the incident.

“Racist abuses during the first test match, now throwing a champagne bottle cork at KL Rahul. Pathetic English fans,” one person tweeted.

“Cork thrown at KL Rahul. Absolutely uncalled for. This series has been played in the right spirit so far,” wrote another user.

“Shameful behaviour from English crowd. Throwing campaign cork towards KL Rahul is not a good thing. Virat Kohli asked him to throw it back !” another Twitter user commented.

Rahul has been India’s star so far at the tournament, scoring a stunning century in the first innings of the ongoing second match.

Speaking about the classy ton, Rahul had said, “It is very special. Not because it was a 100 at Lord’s. That adds to the joy and excitement, I have been away from Test cricket for a couple of years now. I have grown up wanting to be a Test cricketer and playing the longest format. The generation where I grew in, my father loves Test cricket and my coaches always wanted me to do well in the format.”

“Test cricket is very close to my heart. Getting dropped from Test cricket was disappointing, it did hurt but I had nobody to blame. I just waited for my opportunity, the way it came to me, I think it was meant to be. I just enjoyed my batting, getting a 100 at Lord’s makes it more special,” he added.
