The girl group seen in the image is Red Velvet, a South Korean group formed as well as managed by the company SM Entertainment. There are a total of five members in the group- Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and Yeri. The group was initially formed in 2014 and debuted with a single called Happiness. In 2015, Yeri was added to the mix after the release of the group’s debut album, Ice Cream Cake.
Till date, Red Velvet has released 10 extended plays, two studio albums, one compilation as well as on reissue album. Power Up and Red Flavor, two songs by the group, reached the top position of the South Korean Gaon Digital Chart.
The name Red Velvet is reflective of their music. While “Red” stands for their hip-hop, funk, and electronic music influences, “Velvet” refers to the more traditional jazz and ballad influences in their music.
The group is cited by many publications as one of the most popular K-pop groups in the world. As of February 2020, Red Velvet was the fifth most streamed K-pop artist on the music-streaming service, Spotify. Red Velvet stands out from other girl groups of South Korea since its fanbase primarily consists of young women. Most other girl groups have a majority of male fans.
