John Cena plays Peacemaker in the DC web series of the same name. It comes from the mind of James Gunn and is the latest in a long line of content that’s been pushing the boundaries of the superhero genre beyond the typical good guy image that was championed by Marvel and DC until very recently.
Cena first appeared as the character in the new Suicide Squad movie, and his rivalry with Deadshot was amusing. Peacemaker is a killing machine and has relatively little qualms about taking a life if the situation demands it. The popularity of the character led to the spin-off series, which has been a success in its own right.
The first DCEU television series has now been renewed for Season 2 and other spin-offs involving characters from the latest Suicide Squad movie are also in the works.
Cena has been in several movies since his time at WWE, including the most recent Fast and Furious film, where he plays Dominic Toretto’s evil brother. Speaking of his DCEU role, to Podly: The Peacemaker Podcast, Cena said “Peacemaker came from pretty much oblivion. He’s not a well-known character. We saw a little bit of debut of a man who will keep peace at any cost in The Suicide Squad and I guess James Gunn thought that there was a story to be told around that ethos, and around the character. And, I thought The Suicide Squad would be the last time we saw Peacemaker, but here he is back in Peacemaker the series for HBO Max.”
